Lambton Shores Approves One-Month Funding Extension for Huron Shores Area Transit

The Municipality of Lambton Shores has approved up to $50,000 to provide one-month of additional funding for Huron Shores Area Transit, ensuring the transit service continues until the end of April.

Currently funded through the Ontario Community Transportation Grant, this funding stream is scheduled to end on March 31, 2025. The interim funding commitment by Lambton Shores will ensure the system continues to operate uninterrupted and provide additional time to establish alternative long-term funding solutions.

“Huron Shores Area Transit has become a vital service for our community and surrounding areas,” said Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook. “By providing the additional funding required for another month, we remain optimistic that sustainable funding solutions can be secured to ensure this essential service continues to serve the residents of Lambton Shores and surrounding communities.”

Municipal staff are actively working with partners to establish a sustainable, long-term funding strategy. Efforts include an application to the province’s new Ontario Transit Investment Fund and establishing funding commitments from partner municipalities and first nations to help cover operational costs.

Since its launch, Huron Shores Area Transit has provided thousands of rides each year, offering residents reliable and affordable access to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services. Demand for the service continues to grow, with over 25,000 trips recorded in 2024, highlighting the need for a stable, long-term funding solution.

The Municipality will share more information as it becomes available.
