ACCESSIBILITY ON HSAT: We get questions about accessibility on HSAT. Below is a brief outline of two accessibility subjects – the wheelchair lift and carry-on items.
HSAT follows the same guidelines as other transit services that provide accessible travel, which are shaped by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, union contracts, and workplace safety rules.
WHEELCHAIR LIFT: is used for passengers and mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs, appropriately sized scooters, and walkers. The equipment must have brakes, and brakes must be used on the lift. Equipment must be secured at one of the two wheelchair stations.
Non-mobility equipment items that do not have brakes cannot go onto the lift.
PARCELS & BAGS: must sit on the passenger’s lap when on the lift and be under the passenger’s care and control onboard the bus at all times. Bags hanging off the wheelchair or walker must be removed and brought onto the bus separately. All passengers must be able to manage carry-on items, such as backpacks, purses, briefcases, suitcases, tote bags and shopping bags themselves without the driver’s help. If this is not possible, a Support Person or friend should be brought along for help.
Drivers are not required to assist with carry-on items at any time.
